In 1712, a Devon ironmonger named Thomas Newcomen built the first working steam engine — the most important machine in a thousand years. He was never allowed to own it, and nobody today knows where he is buried.
This is the story of the steam engine: the invention that broke the oldest limit in human history and built the modern world — and what it cost the men who made it.
The idea was never the problem. The steam engine was invented, over and over, for sixteen hundred years, and failed every time — not for lack of genius, but because the world could not yet build it.
Every power station on earth still runs on this idea. We never replaced the steam engine. We only found new things to burn.
