A taste of Sweden

A most enjoyable experience with plenty to see and do. We were visiting friends who live to the south of Gothenburg on the west coast. Differences to the UK are immediately obvious; nature is all around with forests and lakes and lots of exposed rock, which adds to the interesting nature of the landscape. The coast is attractive with many offshore islands and on the first day we went on the ferry to the islands of Hono and Foto. Fika is a Swedish tradition, literally meaning "to have a coffee" but in practice this involves cakes also and the range and quality on offer is most impressive (see link below). Swimming in the sea and the lakes is popular with facilities including jetties, diving platforms and ladders for entry and exit. Nature is all around and there is a right to roam (see link below). It's common to wake up and see a deer in the garden or even a Moose! Cycle tracks are everywhere and cycling is very popular. I did a 65k ride mainly on cycle tracks and minor roads finishing with a bash in the forest. There are some long distance cycle routes that are well marked and I was on one of them for some of the ride. But in town one has to be careful crossing the cycle tracks, as many people are on electric scooters and wizzing along.
