Mithridates VI of Pontus, also known as Mithridates the Great, was a very ambitious and determined man. He raised his kingdom of Pontus from an irrelevant backwater to a power that dominated the entire Black Sea. Like many ambitious men, he flew too close to the sun and paid the ultimate price.
