In this 4K60 HDR video, I documented the route through Heidelberg's historic Old Town, starting at Bismarckplatz, continuing past the Church of the Holy Spirit (Heiliggeistkirche), reaching the Karl Theodor Bridge (Old Bridge), and returning back to Bismarckplatz.
🏛️ URBAN & ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY
First documented in 1196, Heidelberg evolved from a medieval Palatine residence into the historic epicenter of German Romanticism. Following total destruction by French troops in 1689 and 1693, the city was systematically rebuilt in the 18th century as a Baroque masterpiece atop its preserved medieval street grid. Home to Germany's oldest university (1386), Heidelberg emerged completely unscathed from World War II bombings, preserving one of Europe's most authentic historic city centers.
Bismarckplatz:
Established in the late 19th century and named after Chancellor Otto von Bismarck in 1875, Bismarckplatz marks the transition between Gründerzeit urban expansion and the historic Old Town. The square anchors the western terminus of the 1.6-kilometer Hauptstraße, one of Europe's longest continuous pedestrian zone.
Marktplatz | Heiliggeistkirche:
Commissioned in 1398 by Prince Elector Ruprecht III (later King Ruprecht I of Germany) as a royal burial site and university church, the Late Gothic hall church was constructed from local red sandstone under master builders including Arnold Riemer, Hans Marx, and Nikolaus Eseler. Positioned directly between the Marktplatz (main market square) to the south and the historic Fischmarkt to the north, the church served as the central intellectual repository housing the Bibliotheca Palatina. Between 1706 and 1936, a interior dividing wall split the structure to accommodate both Protestant services in the nave and Catholic services in the choir. Built into the outer buttresses since the late 15th century, small integrated merchant shops continue to line the church's perimeter
Karl-Theodor-Brücke:
Completed in 1788 under Prince Elector Karl Theodor and master builder Mathias Maier, this iconic nine-arch red sandstone bridge spans the Neckar River, anchored by the medieval 14th-century Bridge Gate (Brückentor). Dynamited by retreating German forces in March 1945, the historic structure was reconstructed using original sandstone and reopened in 1947.
