Carol Ferris came to a funeral almost nobody else came to, read a eulogy a dead man wrote for himself, and left. Half the fandom thinks she was cold. I think she was the only person at that grave who didn't need anything from Hal — and that's exactly why her restraint reads as strange next to everyone else. Hal didn't give the eulogy to Kerry, who he'd come back to Rushville for. He didn't give it to John. He gave it to the one person alive who knew him before the ring. When the last line is "I hope I mattered," you want it read by someone who knows what "I" means.
