surprise.
So yeah, this mind boggling experiment I've performed has actually worked and I saw myself finishing a level of this magnitude. What did it take? Well, obviously the biggest factor was the year long break I took from grinding levels. I did come back and beat something cool occasionally, but I didn't do anything noteworthy. I've had momentary thoughts of returning but I never acted upon them. This time, however, I have decided I'm ready. Being friends with evetS for a good while let me understood how his mental works. At first I thought we were just too different and I could never do what he does, but apparently I was wrong. I just had to warp my mindset and genuinely commit. No comparing myself to better players. No progress expectations. Just small goals I was setting for myself and an infinite time frame to reach them. Didn't manage to do it today? Do it tomorrow. It won't hurt. And yeah, that's how this grind grew to the point where I could actually beat the level. I did take 39 hours which is NOWHERE close my longest grinds, but I'm proud of myself. And I had incredible fun. The grind did get a bit boring past the 30 hour mark but that's completely reasonable. After all, how long can one stay entertained by a level that takes less than 2 minutes?
As for the level - for a top 5, it's absolutely incredible. I don't know if I'll ever see something that provides such enjoyment at such an extreme level of difficulty. It's not perfect by any means, and in the end I'd probably give it something like a 6/10 but like I said - at this difficulty that's very high praise.
The gameplay is very unique. Each section seems to explore different ideas which is pretty commendable as the entire level uses one gamemode. I love the way it flows - you are on a timer but it's lenient enough to the point where you can comfortably go through the gameplay in slightly different ways. Don't get me wrong, you are still required to be nearly perfect but it's just that slight bit of leniency that goes a long way.
There are a few chokepoints that are fairly annoying (notably the green orb at 48 and the gap at 50) - those made me waste many attempts that could have gotten somewhere and were a thorn till the very end. Obviously we have the infamous 75-87 section that is WAY harder than anything else in the level and I've spent countless hours practicing that gameplay. I would say I got consistent enough because I had around a 1/3 passrate on it overall. It is a brutal section with some frame perfects but I found its difficulty weirdly exciting (the song picking up on intensity definitely elevated that).
The deco is nothing special and does feel empty or mediocre in a few sections, but obviously that's not the main point of a top 5 level. I still appreciate the theming and I actually loved the atmosphere of the blue part and the alarm part.
And obviously the best part of the level - the song. It's one of my favourite Waterflame songs and one of the main reasons why I even played this level. It gives it absurd amounts of aura. Midway through the grind my friend @dart4435 made me an acapella cover which was way too high effort for me not to use so I ended up beating the level with it LOL thanks dart
Well, I can't say I know what I'll do next. I'm incredibly happy with my achievement and I still feel motivated to do something else but I can't guarantee anything. I'm taking a gamble and calling this my final hardest because I really don't think I will be able to surpass this achievement. Either way, I'm glad I could do something like this and I finally have something I can truly be proud of. Thank you @evetSGD for letting me rediscover myself and my mindset.
