9Gs AND AGILE MANOEUVRES! DRAGON01 FLT LT TOM NATION IN SEASON RAF TYPHOON FGR4 PRACTICE DEMO

This year's 2026 Typhoon Display Pilot is 29 Squadron's Flt. Lt. Tom Nation, callsign "DRAGON01" and this is one of Tom's in season practice displays. Tom is a classic example of being influenced by airshows and displays, where he was inspired to join the RAF at a young age. Born in Pontypridd, South Wales (hence the cool callsign) he joined 1004 Sqn Air Cadets aged 13 and learned to fly with 634 Volunteer Gliding Squadron. He progressed well here to the level of Gliding Instructor at the age of 16, learning to fly before he passed his driving test no doubt. Tom was determined to become an RAF pilot and began his career path by studying Aerospace Engineering at Swansea University and a member there of the Universities of Wales Air Squadron where he flew the cool Grob Tutor. Then Tom joined the RAF in 2015, completing his IOT (Initial Officer Training) at RAF Cranwell. The next step was Elementary Flying Training (EFT) with 16 Sqn at my local, RAF Wittering. The RAF will stream you to a particular route when it comes to flying, and for Tom, it was fast jet. After EFT, it is BFJT (Basic Fast Jet Training), which would see Tom on a course on the Tucano T1, at RAF Linton on Ouse. Tom achieved his wings, and then went on to AFT (Advanced Flying Training) course at RAF Valley, where he flew the Hawk T2. His career path was streamed for the Typhoon and like all Typhoon career pilots, they come to RAF Coningsby with 29 Squadron, which is an OCU (Operational Conversion Unit). Once Tom was qualified on the Typhoon, he served with ‘The Flying Can Openers’ No. 6 Squadron at RAF Lossiemouth. He flew on many operations in the ME, Eastern Europe and carried out many NATO Air Policing duties. Tom also took part in the '70' formation for the Platinum Jubilee for a Royal flypast. In 2024 he was posted back to 29 Sqn and is a QFI (Qualified Flying Instructor), training the latest men and women on the Typhoon.
