MMCM - Blessed Are The Rich
His house has twelve white windows
Mine has mould beneath the stairs
His wife wears little constellations
Hanging cold beneath her ears
He says abundance follows favor
Like a shadow follows light
So I count every broken thing I own
And wonder what I did
At night
If blessing leaves a mark
Then surely
So does shame
Blessed are the rich
For heaven knows their names
Blessed are the comfortable
Protected from the rain
Blessed are the winners
For victory proves love
And if the poor are holy
Why does no one want
To look like us?
I bought a coat we couldn't manage
Put the balance on a card
Drove a car that made us poorer
So the parking lot looked right
I learned to hide the final notices
Between the family photographs
If favor can be recognized
Then I can learn
To counterfeit
The signs
If blessing leaves a mark
I'll wear it
Till it fits
Blessed are the rich
For heaven knows their names
Blessed are the comfortable
Protected from the rain
Blessed are the winners
For victory proves love
And if the poor are holy
Why does no one want
To look like us?
A man was sleeping by the entrance
On the coldest night that year
Someone said he frightened families
Someone said he smelled of beer
We handed him a printed promise
Then called someone to take him out
And sang about the least among us
Until we couldn't hear him
Shout
Blessed are the hungry
Somewhere else
Blessed are the broken
Out of sight
Blessed are the desperate
As long as their despair
Doesn't interrupt
The service
Tonight
My daughter asked me why God loved them
More than people just like us
I told her faith requires patience
While I watched the pastor's car
Slide beneath the covered entrance
So the rain would miss his suit
And something small inside me whispered
You know exactly
What this proves
There is a camel at the needle
There is blood beneath the gate
There is hunger at the doorway
While we celebrate the plate
There are diamonds on the scripture
There is frost upon his shoes
There is always some theology
To make the fortunate
Look chosen
And the suffering
Look accused
Blessed are the rich
For heaven knows their names
Blessed are the comfortable
Who never feel the rain
Blessed are the winners
Who mistake success for love
And if the poor are holy
Keep them far enough away
From us
Maybe God did not choose them
Maybe money chose itself
Maybe hunger isn't failure
Maybe poverty isn't hell
Maybe all those shining blessings
Are just appetite with hymns
Maybe we built heaven
In our image
And made sure
We got in
Blessed are the rich
That's what we learned to say
Blessed are the comfortable
While someone froze outside
Blessed are the winners
Until winning was our God
And if the poor are holy
We made certain
They stayed
Poor
His house has twelve white windows
Mine has mould beneath the stairs
Tonight
For the first time
I don't think
God put either
There
