Understanding the Ideological Drivers of Russia's War in Ukraine — Dr. Jonathan Leader Maynard

Why does ideology matter in Russia's war against Ukraine? In this Cascade Institute Speaker Series talk, recorded at Royal Roads University in January 2025, Dr. Jonathan Leader Maynard examines the ideological drivers of the conflict and what they reveal about 21st-century international relations — including ideological shifts within Russia, transnational links between Russian ultraconservatism and populist movements in Europe and North America, and why today's ideological competition may prove more destabilizing than Cold War–era dynamics. The talk is followed by an audience Q&A. Dr. Leader Maynard is a Senior Lecturer in International Politics at King's College London and the author of "Ideology and Mass Killing" (Oxford University Press, 2022).
