Saddle between Glen Clova and Glen Muick

For glider pilots flying from the Scottish Gliding Centre at Portmoak Airfield crossing the Cairngorm plateau to the north and north-east is easy with a good cloud base but in difficult thermal conditions it can seem intimidating. Glen Clova running NW and Glen Muick running NE almost meet at Corrie Fee and Loch Muick respectively and a safe crossing of the saddle between them should give either a run down Glen Clova to the flat lands or landing field A10, or a run down Glen Muick to Ballater. This video is from a flight on 10th August 2026 when the NE area towards Aboyne and my first TP of Alford was rather weak. For a while I thought I was going to get stuck over there or have to make a very long detour. In the end it turned out that I used the Glen Clova/ Loch Muick route in both directions.
