8 Days Alone on a Remote Pacific Island

I flew across the country from my home in Michigan to embark on an eight-day adventure in a place I’d never explored before. This was my first time visiting California and the Channel Islands, as I was stepping into an environment that was completely foreign to me. After arriving in Ventura, I boarded a ferry bound for Santa Rosa Island, which is one of the remote islands off the coast of Southern California. Over the next eight days, I spent my time surf fishing the Pacific Ocean, catching fresh meals from the surf, exploring remote beaches, rugged canyons, and camping in the island’s wilderness. Going into this adventure, I had no idea what challenges I might face, what species of fish I might encounter, or how the trip would unfold. I was simply excited to experience a new environment and see where the adventure would take me. Looking back, I can honestly say this trip exceeded my expectations, and I can’t wait to return someday.
