How I Breed Hundreds of Rainbow Shiners | Eggs to Fry

How do you breed Rainbow Shiners and successfully raise the fry? In this video, I'm showing my complete process for spawning and raising Rainbow Shiners (Notropis chrosomus) — from collecting the eggs to hatching and growing out the fry. Rainbow Shiners have become the backbone of my fish breeding operation, and after raising multiple batches, I've developed a system that has been working extremely well for me. In this video I cover: • My Rainbow Shiner breeding setup • The 3D-printed spawning and egg collection system I designed • How I collect and harvest the eggs • How I prepare the eggs for a strong hatch • What newly hatched Rainbow Shiner fry look like • The fry again the following day • Older batches at several different stages of growth • What I've learned from repeatedly spawning and raising this species Rainbow Shiners are egg-scattering North American native fish, and getting the eggs away from the adults is an important part of deliberately producing fry. My system is designed to make that process repeatable and make collecting the eggs much easier. One of my favorite parts of this video is that I can show you several generations at once — from eggs and newly hatched fry all the way through older juveniles. You can actually see the progression instead of just talking about it. There isn't nearly as much detailed information available about breeding Rainbow Shiners as there is for many common aquarium fish, so I wanted to document the entire process that is working here at Mohr Aquatics. This isn't the only way to breed them — it's simply the system and process I've developed in my own fish room.
