How I Became a VA Bookkeeper With No Degree (My Childhood Story)

No degree. No experience. A few years ago, I didn’t even know what accounting was. So how did I end up working as a VA bookkeeper for almost five years? The answer goes back to my childhood, to a wristwatch, a strict father, and a promise I had to keep. I’ve never told this story in this much detail. If you’ve ever felt unqualified, too late, or stuck where you are, watch until the end. Stay for the Q&A too, where I answer questions about where the demand is in bookkeeping right now and what AI means for VAs. 🎯 Chapters 0:00 Why I’m Telling This Story 1:23 My Father’s Strict Rules 1:57 The Wristwatch and the 5 O’Clock Rule 3:37 Growing Up in the Banana Fields 5:56 Vocational High School Life 7:34 The Dream I Wanted to Chase 8:49 When Everything Changed 9:53 My Father’s Only Request 13:13 Keeping the Promise 14:48 Choosing a Different Path 17:32 The Day My Name Wasn’t on the List 19:04 Meeting Accounting for the First Time 21:19 The Pandemic and the Banana Chip Factory 23:20 The Google Search That Changed Everything 24:44 Saving Up for My First Training 26:31 The Certification That Almost Broke Me 27:25 Leaving the Factory and Finding My First Client 27:44 How I See My Story Now 30:38 A Regret I Don’t Want You to Have 32:48 Q&A: What’s in Demand in Bookkeeping? 40:46 Q&A: Years in the VA Industry 42:27 Q&A: Online Skills and AI 43:39 Why I’m Not Threatened by AI 46:44 Closing Prayer 📚 Want to become a VA bookkeeper or land your first client?
