The second pitch of Rooster Rock is a wandering, chossy adventure climb that takes you up the path of least resistance up a dihedral. Climbers must be careful which holds they trust, or risk sending loose rock down onto their belayers or climbers below. While seemingly plentiful, this means that the gear must be carefully assessed, so as to avoid placing protection behind loose sections of rock. For the especially adventures, there are even many spots where fully natural gear is possible, slinging chockstones, or tunnels through the rock.
Rumor has it that the first ascent of Rooster Rock was carried out by a Swedish sailor. The story goes that while sailing the Columbia River, they climbed to the top on the dare of their crew.
Rooster Rock is a must-do route for any trad climber in Northwest Oregon. It is an adventure climb featuring overgrown holds, plenty of choss, and thoughtful movement. Falling is certainly not a good idea. Upon a successful ascent, you are rewarded with panoramic views, and a solid spot to eat lunch in a cooler place.
