Trying DTF transfers for the first time? See how I made a hoodie, what I learned, and my thoughts on how DTF compares to HTV and printable iron-on.
I’ve used HTV for plenty of projects, but DTF transfers seem to be everywhere lately, so I decided it was time to try them for myself. In this video, I’m making a hoodie with a DTF transfer and sharing what I learned along the way — including a few little things I wish I had known before getting started.
I’m definitely not a DTF expert yet, so this is more of a real first-experience look at the process: how the transfer applies, how it compares to working with HTV, and what I think of the finished result.
If you’ve been curious about trying DTF transfers for shirts, hoodies, or other fabric projects, hopefully this gives you a helpful look at what to expect.
Have you tried DTF transfers yet? And if you normally use HTV, do you think DTF is worth making the switch?

I finally jumped on the DTF transfer bandwagon! After years of making shirts and hoodies with HTV and printable iron-on, I kept seeing DTF transfers everywhere and wanted to find out for myself: Are DTF transfers really easier, faster, and worth switching to?
In this video, I’m bringing you along for one of my first DTF transfer projects as I make custom hoodies using a heat press. I’ll show you how I placed and pressed the transfers, what happened when I peeled the carrier sheet, and a few things I learned that I wish I had understood before getting started.
I also compare DTF vs HTV and printable iron-on — especially when it comes to weeding, lining up individual pieces, working with detailed designs, and the overall amount of effort involved. After making these hoodies and washing one of the designs several times, I’m sharing my first impressions and whether I think I’ll use DTF transfers again.
In this video, you’ll learn:
• How I applied a DTF transfer to a hoodie
• Why DTF pressing instructions can vary by supplier
• What I learned about peeling the carrier sheet
• How DTF compares to HTV and printable iron-on
• Why detailed DTF designs can save so much weeding and placement time
• My first impressions after trying DTF transfers
Have you tried DTF transfers yet? If you normally use HTV or printable iron-on, do you think DTF is worth making the switch? Let me know in the comments!
My goal here at Katherine Learns Stuff is to make DIY crafting feel approachable by trying projects, sharing what worked (and what didn’t!), and passing along what I learn along the way.
