We’re taking a little break from our Journey to the Eras Tour… but that doesn’t mean we’re taking a break from Taylor Swift. 👀 After recently watching Taylor’s full GRAMMY Icon Sessions interview and her incredible piano mashup, Rick, Robert AND Corrina are back to react to the performance and they were NOT prepared for what they were about to see. This episode picks up just minutes after we finished watching the Icon Sessions interview, so the boys are coming into this reaction with Taylor very fresh in their minds. Before we press play, we talk about what a mashup actually is, the songs Taylor brings together, and why this particular performance is so interesting. Then Taylor sits down at the piano. And everything changes. Watching Taylor casually talk, laugh, smile, play piano, think through her arrangements and then effortlessly launch into an incredibly complicated mashup completely blew the guys away. And then she actually starts playing… Their reactions only get more intense from there. One of their biggest highlights was the transition from “August” into the “I Knew You Were Trouble” bridge, which we ended up replaying multiple times because Robert simply could not understand how effortless it sounded. His biggest takeaway? Everything sounds like it was written to go together. Except it wasn’t. We also dive into Taylor’s completely reimagined version of “August,” including the changes to the melody, notes, tone and flow that make this stripped-down performance feel almost like an entirely different song. And then, almost perfectly on cue, “All Too Well” enters the mix. Since Rick and Robert haven’t experienced the full song yet, this gives them a little sneak peek at some of Taylor’s most devastating songwriting, especially the line: “You kept me like a secret, but I kept you like an oath.” Yeah… that one got them. We also take a quick detour into the infamous red scarf theory and the connection to Jake Gyllenhaal, including the absolutely perfect Spider-Man/Taylor Swift meme about how they both ended Jake with a bridge. 😂 By the end of the performance, the boys are essentially begging for this version to be available on Spotify and talking about how Taylor’s brain must work on an entirely different wavelength. And honestly? This is one of those performances where you can SEE the musicianship. It’s not just the songwriting. It’s not just the vocals. It’s not just the piano playing. It’s the ability to take multiple songs, completely rethink them, find connections between melodies and lyrics, rearrange them on the fly, and make the entire thing sound effortless. For Rick and Robert, this was another major step in their journey toward understanding exactly why Taylor Swift has reached the level she has. And by the end, they had one very simple conclusion: Taylor deserves everything. All the awards. All the accolades. All the love. All the support. Because performances like this make it very easy to understand just how much talent, creativity and work has gone into building the career she has today. 💬 What did YOU think of Taylor’s mashup? Which transition was your favorite?
