Naga Dynasty
History:
In the last phase of the second century AD, the influence of the Kushan Empire had ended in the southern region of Madhya Pradesh and the dominance of the Bharshiv Nagas had been established. Padmavati is identified with the modern place called 'Pavaiya' (Padam Pavaiya) located near Gwalior. Nine Naga dynasty kings ruled here. Since the Nagas of this place used to carry Shivalinga on their shoulders, they were called 'Bharshiv'. These people had matrimonial relations with the Guptas and the Vakatakas.
A branch of the Naga dynasty of Mathura established rule in MP.
Founder: According to historians, the founder of the Naga dynasty was Vrishnag who established this dynasty in Vidisha at the end of the second century.
Capital- According to the Puranas, Padmavati and Krantipuri (Kutwar) were the two capitals of the Nagas.
Evidence:
Information- Sanskrit poetry, Puranas (Vishnu Purana) and coins (obtained from Besnagar excavation) are noteworthy.
No records of their own are available but coins were circulated in large numbers by them, which is the main source of information.
The name of Ganapati Nag appears in the Allahabad stone pillar inscription of Samudragupta, who was probably the last king of this dynasty.
Nagasen is mentioned as the king of Padmavati in Harshcharit written by Bana.
Padmavati is also mentioned in Maltimadhava of dramatist Bhavabhuti.
Geographical location:
The main centers have been Padmavati, Eran, Vidisha and Kantipuri. Outside Madhya Pradesh, they have also ruled Mathura.
