If your dog ever stands on two legs at the front door at night, stand with it. Do not call it away, do not turn on a light, and whatever you hear, do not look through the peephole. It is 3:10 a.m. The warm weight at the foot of your bed is gone. You find your dog in the dark hallway, standing upright with both front paws pressed to the door, eye level with the peephole. It will not come when you call. Its back legs have not started shaking yet. This Bureau holds accounts of this same night from four households that never knew each other: a nurse in Leeds, a retired postman in Ohio, a student in Melbourne, and a farmer outside Calgary. Every dog chose the same door. Here are the seven rules they learned, some of them the hard way. Before you watch, answer one question: where does your dog sleep, and which way does it face? Keep the answer. This file will ask for it again. ⏱ CHAPTERS 0:00 Your dog is standing at the front door 0:40 Rule 1 · Do not call it away 1:55 File: the postman in Ohio 2:45 Rule 2 · Do not turn on a light 3:55 Rule 3 · Do not look through the peephole 5:05 File: the student in Melbourne 5:55 Rule 4 · Make no sound it cannot explain 7:00 Rule 5 · If it looks back, do not look away 8:20 Rule 6 · When it slides, stand behind it 9:30 What the four households had in common 10:50 Rule 7 · When it lies down, you stand up 🐾 THE REAL SCIENCE IN THIS FILE The story is fiction, but the dog facts are real: • Dogs follow human pointing better than chimpanzees, even as untrained puppies (Hare et al., Science, 2002) • Dogs have a muscle that raises the inner eyebrow into "puppy eyes", which is barely present in wolves (Kaminski et al., PNAS, 2019) • A shared gaze between dogs and owners raises oxytocin in both (Nagasawa et al., Science, 2015) • Dogs hear up to about 45,000 Hz and see far better than we do in dim light • Dogs have up to 300 million scent receptors; humans have about 6 million 💬 Tonight, look at which way your dog faces when it settles down. Tell us in the comments, with its name, so we know who is on duty. 🔔 Subscribe for more files from the Bureau. New rules, new doors, every week. ⚠️ This is a work of fiction. The households, the rules, and the thing on the doormat are invented for storytelling and are not real safety advice. No dog is hurt in this story; it only gets very tired. #dogs #horrorstory #scarystories #dogbehavior #rules
