I spent years believing certain things in our marriage would get better if Jake would simply change. But one of the hardest lessons I learned after 34 years of marriage was realizing that I had things to learn and change too.
Jake came into our marriage as a widower who had already been married for 12 years. I came in as a single mother of two teenage sons who had never been married. We brought different histories, habits, expectations and ways of living into one home.
For years, I sometimes confused “different” with “wrong.”
In this video, I’m sharing what happened when I stopped trying to change my husband and started examining the part I was playing in our marriage too.
This isn’t about taking responsibility for another person’s harmful behavior. It’s about the ordinary work of marriage: communication, expectations, understanding, grace, growth and learning how to build one life out of two very different people.
After 34 years of marriage and 40 years with the same man, I’m still learning.
