Welcome to James’ Odyssey! 👋
Namibia 🇳🇦
🏜️ Our Sandwich Harbour Adventure
Our journey to Sandwich Harbour began in Walvis Bay, Namibia, after visiting the famous pink salt ponds.
From there, we headed south along the wild Atlantic coastline in a 4x4, deflating the tires to safely navigate the soft sand and steep dunes. The journey itself was an adventure, with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Namib Desert on the other.
Along the way, we spotted cormorants, springbok, hardy desert plants, and even unexpected pockets of freshwater hidden among the dunes.
💎 Hidden Colours of the Desert
We also discovered reddish-pink patches of sand created by iron-rich minerals and other geological deposits, including garnet, magnetite, tourmaline, and quartz.
It almost looked as though tiny gemstones had been scattered across the desert.
🌊 Where the Ocean Meets the Desert
As we ventured deeper into Namib-Naukluft National Park, the dunes grew higher and the journey became more challenging.
Sandwich Harbour is extremely remote, with soft sand, steep dunes, shifting tides, and unpredictable terrain. Our local driver, Roger, navigated the area in a capable 4x4, something that is essential for reaching this part of the coast safely.
For most visitors, a guided tour is the easiest option, while independent visitors need the appropriate permit.
⚠️ The Rising Tide
One of the most intense parts of our journey was driving along the narrow stretch between the ocean and the towering dunes.
Roger told us about a vehicle that had previously become trapped by the rising tide. The passengers had to escape and climb the dunes, while the ocean eventually swept the vehicle away.
It made the journey feel very real — and suddenly the road ahead didn't seem quite so harmless.
And I couldn't help wondering:
Is this why it's called Sandwich Harbour? 🤔
Because at times, it really felt like we were sandwiched between the Atlantic Ocean and the massive dunes of the Namib Desert.
🌍 A Truly Unique Landscape
Sandwich Harbour is believed to have been named after the English whaling ship Sandwich, which charted the area in the 1780s. Another theory connects the name to the German word Sandfische, meaning "sandfish."
Today, the former harbour is a protected coastal lagoon known for its birdlife and spectacular landscape where desert dunes meet the Atlantic Ocean.
