I. The Invocation
The Search for Meaning
The Invocation explores humanity's instinctive need to believe that something greater exists beyond ourselves...that the universe has intention, that suffering serves a purpose, and that somewhere there are answers to our deepest questions. The narrator begins with an almost childlike faith in a benevolent cosmic order, only to discover that the universe offers no promises, explanations, or reassurances. As that certainty begins to unravel, wonder gives way to existential dread. The song introduces the album's central question: If the universe owes us nothing, where do we find meaning, purpose, and the strength to continue?
[Lyrics]
Once I thought the stars were windows
Cut into a kinder place.
I spent whole winters looking upward
For a single familiar face.
The years went by. The glass stayed dark.
The names grew harder to recall.
I did not stop believing.
I just learned how far things fall.
We made a map of every absence,
Drew a border round the night.
Called the unknown something sacred,
Held the paper to the light.
But nothing on the other side
Had ever promised to be kind.
The universe kept turning
With our questions left behind.
If there is a voice beyond the distance,
Why does it sound so much like mine?
If there is a hand beneath the ocean,
Why am I the one who holds the line?
The sky owes nothing.
No answer. No reply.
And still I bear its weight
Every time I ask it why.
NO ANSWER!
NO REPLY!
I HEAR MY OWN VOICE
COMING BACK FROM THE SKY!
We carved our certainty from terror,
Built a temple out of doubt.
Set a thousand candles burning
Just to keep the darkness out.
Stone by stone we raised the ceiling,
Said the stars were ours to name.
When the walls began to tremble,
We blamed the ground beneath the frame.
LET IT SHAKE!
LET IT SPLIT!
I WILL NOT PRETEND
THAT THE CRACKS DO NOT EXIST!
Once I thought the stars were windows.
Now I know how glass can break.
If there is no one there to catch us,
What are we prepared to make?
The sky owes nothing.
(No answer. No reply.)
And still I bear its weight.
(I WILL NOT CLOSE MY EYES.)
