Ontario has a saltwater coastline, real ocean tides, and polar bears — and almost nobody knows it. Nine-tenths of this province is Northern Ontario, but only six percent of its people live there. That gap is where this story lives.
I'm Clifford Daniel, a geography teacher, and in this video we head north from Sudbury to Hudson Bay through 12 things about Ontario that most Canadians have never heard. You'll see the scar of a giant collision from space that left behind the world's nickel, the moon-like landscape where Apollo astronauts trained before going to the Moon, a town you can't drive to that's served by the Polar Bear Express, one of the oldest communities in Ontario sitting on an island in the far north, rivers that start flowing the other way, roads made of ice, and the largest provincial park in Ontario — with no roads in it at all.
A map shows you where things are. It doesn't show you what makes them remarkable.
