Orbán pápa 1095-ben a Clermonti zsinaton meghirdette az első keresztes hadjáratot, amelynek célja az iszlám kézben lévő Szentföld megszerzése volt. Ezzel a pápa egy majd 200 éven át tartó hadjárathullámot indított el, amely során 8 komolyabb keresztes hadjáratot vezettek Európa urai.
