In 1861, five hundred men crawled under a six-story Chicago hotel and lifted it six feet into the air, by hand, with the guests still inside. It looked like madness, until you realize the whole city was doing the same thing just to survive.
This is the story of Ellis Chesbrough, the engineer who asked a different question about a flat, flooded city, and George Pullman, the house-mover whose boring family trade became the skill Chicago suddenly needed.

Documented vs dramatized
The events, dates and figures follow the sources below. Several scenes are AI-generated illustrations of moments no one photographed: the men under the hotel, the guests behind the window, the jackscrews, the mud street, the sewer and street-raising diagrams, the pump house, the masons, the hotel steps and window, and some short moving shots. They show how a scene might have looked, not a record of it. The full-length figures of Chesbrough and Pullman are illustrations based on their portraits. Where the narration says "I think" or "the way I see it", that is my reading, not the record. Mr. Beecher's account is paraphrased.
