In 1976, Kodak sold 90% of America's film and 85% of its cameras. In January 2012, it filed for bankruptcy. The digital camera — the invention that killed it — was built inside Kodak's own laboratory in 1975, by Kodak's own engineer, Steven Sasson. Management's reaction, in his own recollection, was polite — and fatal. This is the full rise and fall: the empire film built, the invention it buried, the comeback that almost worked, and the collapse.
