湘江怨 (Xiangjiang Grievance / "Жалоба на реке Сян") The poem “To the Lady of the Xiang River” (from the cycle “Nine Elegies,” author — Qu Yuan, circa 340–278 BCE) Why don’t you come, My beloved Lord? Why do you wander alone Across the deserted islands? I wait with hope and anxiety, Yet you, Lord, do not come. I, playing my pipe, I entrust my sorrow to her. Tears flow without counting, Like a river, they stream… With pain, I think humbly Of you, my Lord. This is the lament of the spirit of the concubine Nüying for the deceased Emperor Shun. The heroine addresses the spirit of her master, who has become the deity of the Xiang River. She dresses up, plays the flute, and sails to meet him, but the meeting does not take place. The text conveys the deep sorrow of separation: the heroine pours out her grief in music, and her endless tears fall into the water. According to legend, it was these tears, shed out of great sorrow, that left dark spots on the stems of the coastal bamboo, giving rise to the “Xiangfei” variety (“Xiang’s Wife”). Текст передает глубокую скорбь разлуки: героиня изливает свое горе в музыке, а ее бесконечные слезы падают в воду. Именно эти пролитые от великой печали слезы, согласно легенде, оставили темные пятна на стеблях прибрежного бамбука, породив сорт «Сянфэй» («Жены правителя Сян»).
