Northern State Recreation Area Walk With Me

The other day I walked around the Northern State Recreation Area which the land and the old abandoned mental hospital and farm from 1912 sit. This gorgeous land has deep history and the ghosts of the past meet with the spray painted voices of today. It’s interesting to me to watch the buildings decay and how those that express themselves through graffiti leave their mark upon a land with mixed emotional and energetic waves ebbing and flowing throughout time. An angry statement, a funny joke, a cutesy image splashed across crumbling walls where rabbits dash through holes and pigeons take flight through rooftop openings. How nature continues to flourish and materials from man decline in the physical and those who dare to speak through dripping paint and sips of energy drinks and alcohol, litter their amusements as they navigate this curious and unexplainable third dimension. It’s really a very intriguing property and there is a book with stories about it and they do have some very nice informational signage around the hospital buildings too.
