In September 2013, thousands of people from all over the world gathered in a farm field in Pierce, Nebraska. Some flew in from Norway, Brazil and Australia. They had all come to see the same thing: around five hundred old Chevrolets, lined up in long rows in the grass.
Some were rusted through, with trees growing up around them. But some had never been sold. The first truck up for auction was a 1958 Chevrolet Cameo with just 1.3 miles on the clock, still waiting for its first owner after fifty-five years.
They all belonged to Ray Lambrecht, a small-town Chevy dealer who ran his dealership with his wife Mildred for fifty years, and who quietly stopped selling some of his cars. In this video, you’ll hear how a boy who drove his mother to town at nine years old became the man behind one of the most famous car auctions in American history, and why he kept those cars for so long.
Would you have been in that field in 2013? And which car would you have bought? Tell me in the comments. I read every single one of them.
