1. Prepare before the chicks arrive
Clean and disinfect the chicken house.
Make sure the house is dry, well ventilated, secure from predators, and protected from rain.
Put down dry litter such as wood shavings or chopped straw, about 5–10 cm deep.
Set up feeders and drinkers before arrival.
Prepare a heat source for the first few weeks.
Have clean drinking water and chick starter feed ready.
Ideally, use all-in/all-out management: don't mix new chicks with older chickens.
Brooder temperature
Age Approx. temperature
Week 1 32–35°C
Week 2 29–32°C
Week 3 27–29°C
Week 4 24–27°C
After week 4 Usually ambient temperature if adequately feathered
Watch the chicks rather than relying only on a thermometer: huddling under the heat means they're cold; moving far away and panting means they're too hot.
2. Day 1–7: Brooding
When the chicks arrive:
Give them clean, lukewarm drinking water immediately.
Make sure every chick finds the water.
Provide good-quality chick starter feed.
Keep the brooder warm, dry and draft-free.
Check the chicks several times each day.
Remove wet litter promptly.
Avoid overcrowding.
