🕌 Champanagar’s 400-Year-Old Mausoleum Did you know that Champanagar in Bhagalpur has a fascinating connection with Mughal history? An old inscription found at a mausoleum in Champanagar is dated 1032 AH (1622–23 CE), during the reign of Mughal Emperor Jahangir. The inscription says that Khwaja Ahmad Samarqandi, who was appointed Faujdar of the Sarkar of Monghyr, built the mausoleum. It also mentions Prince Parviz, Jahangir’s son, who was appointed Governor of Bihar around this time. 📜 What does the inscription say? The stone inscription begins with the Kalma and mentions the first four Caliphs: Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and Ali. It then records the construction of the mausoleum in 1032 AH (1622–23 CE). Interestingly, the identity of the saint buried here is still uncertain. Some old accounts referred to the place as Maskan-i-Brari and described the buried saint as a Sunni Makhdum. 🌊 The story of Champanala The mausoleum was built on an elevated platform near the Champanala, a watercourse that once flowed beneath the structure. Local tradition says that the nala followed an old channel of the Ganges. Merchant boats travelling through the waterway were believed to frequently meet with accidents at this spot. According to the legend, a wealthy merchant built the mausoleum, and after its construction, the accidents stopped. Whether the story is fact or folklore, it has become an interesting part of Champanagar’s local history. ⚔️ Why Monghyr was important The inscription also reminds us of the importance of Monghyr (Munger) during the Mughal period. Located near the Ganges, Monghyr was an important military and administrative centre. It controlled important land and river routes and later became famous during the time of Nawab Mir Qasim. 🕯️ A forgotten chapter of Bhagalpur The Champanagar inscription is more than just an old stone. It connects Bhagalpur, Monghyr, Prince Parviz and the Mughal administration of Bihar more than 400 years ago.
