No. 3 Stanford took down No. 1 Virginia in a thrilling 2-1 victory at a sold-out Cagan Stadium. In a top-five battle, the Cardinal improved to 11-1-1 overall and 5-0-1 in ACC play. The win marked Stanford’s third ranked victory of the season and its first over a top-ranked opponent since 2022.
Senior Jasmine Aikey opened the scoring in the 27th minute with a spectacular bicycle kick goal, her team-leading 11th of the year. Charlotte Kohler netted the eventual game-winner in the 37th minute, heading home a cross from Lizzie Boamah to give Stanford a 2-0 lead. Virginia cut the deficit in the 72nd minute, but the Cardinal defense and goalkeeper Caroline Birkel held strong to secure the win. Birkel finished with three saves, including a crucial stop early in the match to keep things level.
Stanford has now scored 51 goals in its first 13 matches and remains unbeaten at home this season with a 9-0-0 record, outscoring opponents 38-3 at Cagan Stadium. Aikey has contributed at least a point in 11 of 13 matches and has scored in each of the last four contests. Kohler has added points in nine matches this year, including three game-winners.
The Cardinal now turns its attention to another top-five matchup, traveling to face No. 5 Florida State on Thursday.
