THREE HUNDRED AND ONE: Student-Produced Drama Brings Juvenile Crime to the Stage

The play is set in the early 2000s at a juvenile correctional facility in Shijing, Guangzhou, China. Sixteen-year-old AJIE is serving a ten-year sentence for his involvement in a robbery. During a visit from his parents on his birthday, their ordinary questions about food, work, and bathing gradually reveal the reality of prison life that he has tried to hide from them. The details depicted in the play draw on interviews I conducted with former juvenile prisoners as part of my research into juvenile criminal psychology. By offering a glimpse into juvenile prison life, the play warns young people, particularly those at risk of offending, about the lasting consequences of crime.
