Serial number PA474. It was built in 1945, at a factory near Chester, for a war on the other side of the world — and that war ended before it could fly a single mission. That is the reason this Avro Lancaster still exists, eighty years later, one of only two left in the world that can still fly. An 8-minute story of the bomber, told through one airframe: Roy Chadwick's four-Merlin answer to the failed Manchester, a crew of seven and a bomb bay thirty-three feet long, the 7,377 Lancasters built, Operation Manna and the food drops over the starving western Netherlands in 1945, PA474's strange second life as a survey aircraft and a flying laboratory, its return to Lincolnshire with 44 Squadron, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, the 2015 engine fire — and the summer of 2014, when the last two flying Lancasters flew side by side over England.
