An original medieval drinking song with lyrics — tavern music for D&D nights, sung by Silas Halfpenny over hand-played bodhrán, fiddle drone, tin whistle and a boot-stamp. He is very good at leaving rooms, and he has never once got out of this one.
Good for the last hour of a long night at the table, a friend who says they're leaving every twenty minutes, or a D&D session where the party's bard keeps almost going home.
Keep a seat at the table: / @thelastcopper
From the songbook of Silas Halfpenny, entry the thirty-fourth.
Three times tonight I got my coat on, and three times I never reached the door: a cup in my hand before the sleeve was up, weather Wat swore only a fool would walk into, the cooper calling me back.
The fourth time nobody stopped me. No round, no Wat, the door wide open. I stood in it a while, and then I hung the coat up and sat back down. I have never said out loud what it is I do that for, and I am not starting here.
If nobody stops you, you'll have to stop yourself. — Silas Halfpenny
━━━━━━━━━━ LYRICS ━━━━━━━━━━
I never got the second arm in.
Wat had a cup in my hand before the sleeve was up.
And I had not even got to the door yet.
I stand up. I say my goodnight. I mean it.
The cooper starts the end of a story I heard the front of.
My stool has not gone cold before I'm back in it.
Nobody leaves mid-round. That isn't a rule. It's just what happens.
If a man gets as far as the door
there is always a cup in his way!
(Man at the door!)
Nobody gets out while it's pouring,
and it is always pouring.
TAKE HIS COAT OFF HIM!
The next time I had the door open. There was weather in it.
Wat says only a fool walks out into that, and hands me a reason.
The time after, both arms in, a hand on the latch -
and the cooper said my name in a voice that wanted answering.
Of course I turned round.
If a man gets as far as the door
there is always a cup in his way!
(Man at the door!)
Nobody gets out while it's pouring,
and it is always pouring.
TAKE HIS COAT OFF HIM!
I can put a coat on in a way that gets a man's attention.
Slow. One sleeve. Somewhere a person can see me do it.
I have been walking out of rooms my whole life. I am good at it.
I have never been any good at the other thing.
So tonight I did it properly. Slow. One sleeve. Stood by the hook.
And nothing happened. Nobody called a round. Wat was long gone.
The door was open, and not one thing between me and it.
I stood in it a while.
Then I hung the coat up and I sat back down -
and I have never said out loud what it is I do that for.
If a man gets as far as the door
there is always a cup in his way!
(Man at the door!)
Nobody gets out while it's pouring,
and it is always pouring.
TAKE HIS COAT OFF HIM!
If a man gets as far as the door
there is always a cup in his way!
(Man at the door!)
Nobody gets out while it's pouring,
and it is always pouring.
TAKE HIS COAT OFF HIM!
Wat will be back tomorrow and he won't remember a minute of it.
He'll have a cup in my hand before I get one arm in a sleeve.
And I will let him. I have every night I have been in this house.
