IP Routing defines the logic for forwarding IP packets from the originating host to their final destinations. The logic sits just far enough above the physical transmission details, so it remains consistent regardless of the physical layer technologies used throughout the entire route. New physical and data link layer technologies may come and go, but IP routing has remained a fundamental component of how networks operate for over forty years.
This video discusses the foundational concepts of how IP routing works. The logic runs from the source host to the first router (the source host’s default router), then to the next router, and so on, until the final router forwards the packet to the destination host. The logic differs between hosts and routers, with slight variations in logic between intermediate routers and the final router. This video touches on all those concepts, and more!
