On May 20, 1916, three filthy, bearded men walked into a whaling station on South Georgia. The manager didn't recognize them. One of them said, "My name is Shackleton."
This is the story of Ernest Shackleton's Endurance expedition. The ship is crushed by ice in the Weddell Sea. Twenty-eight men camp on the drifting pack. Six of them take a lifeboat, the James Caird, 800 miles across the Southern Ocean. Then Shackleton, Frank Worsley and Tom Crean cross South Georgia's unmapped mountains on foot to reach Stromness. Three months later, on August 30, the 22 men left on Elephant Island are taken off. Every man comes home alive.
It matters because the expedition failed at its goal and still became one of the great stories of leadership under pressure. And in March 2022, the wreck of Endurance was found on the seabed, 100 years to the day after Shackleton's burial.
