The night starts behind the glass. In a black apron and a clip-on tie, the narrator has carried three hundred drinks past a rooftop bar's window without one second to stop and look. Around the service door sit a bin bag, a crate of empties nobody will count and a mop clocking off with the staff, while a chef in the doorway light tells someone at home he will be late again. Then come two knocks. She arrives from the coat check with half a bottle nobody was ever coming back for, her hair out of its clip, her sleeves shoved up, wearing the face of someone who has had enough. Out on the rusty fire escape, with two plastic cups and a city doing its whole trick below, they toast the wrong side of the glass. The guests paid four hundred for the terrace; these two got the ladder and the rust, the same song through the wall and, as they see it, better company. She has hung nine hundred coats since five o'clock without a single thank you. She sits on the grate in a five-pound dress, heels on the rail, back on the brick, and clinks the narrator's cup with the ticket gun. A tray of real champagne parades past the window, and nobody inside notices them. The turn is quiet and tender. Somewhere inside, somebody proposes, but the real moment is out here: her hands smelling of other people's coats, a staple in her thumb, a mug stain on her wrist, and the narrator realising there has never been anything they wanted to hold more. By the last chorus the wrong side of the glass has become the right side after all. "Best table in the building." WHAT THIS SONG IS ABOUT This is a song about finding luxury in what you already have. It celebrates working people who serve the party all night and then make a better one from leftovers, rust and a free view. Underneath the bright groove is a love story told through small, honest details, where warm cheap wine in bad cups beats any terrace price, and being seen by one person beats being tipped by a room. WHO IT IS FOR Play it as after work party music when the shift finally ends, or on a rooftop summer night with the people who got you through the week. It is for bartenders, servers, cooks and coat-check crews, for anyone who loves a working class romance, and for listeners hunting a nu disco love song with real heart. If your playlist runs on feel good disco pop and dance pop that tells a story, this one belongs there.
