Two normal pandas had a brown baby, so I went into Minecraft's code to find out why. It turns out the game's animals run on real genetics: hidden genes, Mendel's 1 in 4, mutations, blending inheritance and bell curves. I tested all of it in game. And Minecraft does one thing real genetics can't.

Everything comes from the Minecraft 26.3 code and in-game tests.
Pandas (Panda.java)
Every panda has a main gene and a hidden gene. There are 7 genes: normal, lazy, worried, playful, aggressive, weak, brown.
Brown and weak are recessive: they only show if both genes match.
Wild odds per gene: normal 5/16, weak 5/16, brown 2/16, the rest 1/16 each. About 1 in 64 wild pandas is brown.
Each parent passes one gene at random, and each gene of the baby has a 1/32 chance to mutate into a random gene.
Two carrier pandas: 23.8% brown babies (Mendel's 25% minus mutations).
Two pure normal pandas: about 1 in 65,536 brown babies (both genes have to mutate into brown).
Breeding needs just one bamboo block within about 8 blocks.
A dominant gene in the hidden slot is ignored, so two normal-looking pandas hiding a lazy gene have lazy babies 48.6% of the time.
Sheep (Sheep.java, DyeColor.java)
A lamb's colour is the crafting recipe of its parents' dyes. With no recipe, it copies one parent at random.
Horses (AbstractHorse.java)
A foal's stats are the parents' average plus (3 random numbers / 3 − 0.5) times the range, which makes a bell curve with no regression to the mean.
Speed ranges from about 4.7 to 14.2 blocks/s.
In-game tests (26.3 server)
100 carrier pairs: 26 brown babies, plus 1 lazy mutation.
100 hidden-lazy pairs: 47 lazy babies.
Horses: the fastest of 20 wild horses was 12.3 blocks/s; after 9 foals I had 13.7 blocks/s.
The real brown panda: Qizai, Qinling Mountains (Bace2 gene, PNAS 2024).
