China couldn’t secure a top four finish, rendering this match meaningless. They’ll now compete for fifth to eighth place. However, China lost to Germany and the USA defeated Germany 3-2 earlier, so they’re still not guaranteed a spot in the top eight. China’s #7 player, Zhou Suhong (27, 1.82m), missed the World Grand Prix due to injury but has fully recovered and is back in the tournament. After two years of preparation, the top player, #1 Wang Yimei (18, 1.9m), started alongside #3 Yang Hao (26, 1.83m). #2 Feng Kun (28, 1.83m) and #4 Liu Yanan (26, 1.86m) led the team. #17 Xu Yunli (19, 1.96m) was also a starter. While #7 performed well in the first phase, her scoring ability declined after phase two, shifting the responsibility to #1 and #3. It’s been a long time since #4’s peak, dating back to 2006. The Dutch girls, #4 Chaïne Staelens (26, 1.94m) and #12 Manon Flier (22, 1.92m), scored 28 and 20 points respectively. China’s blocking and serve were superior to the Dutch, but the key factor was the Dutch girls’ improved defence in the latter sets. The Chinese players were ageing, prompting a significant team overhaul in 2007.
