South Africa is facing a fatherhood crisis.
According to the State of South Africa’s Fathers 2024 report, 64.5% of children did not live in the same household as their biological father in 2023.
But what does that actually mean?
Are South African men abandoning their responsibilities? Are mothers sometimes contributing to father absence? How much do poverty, unemployment, apartheid-era family separation and relationship breakdown play a role? And what happens to children who grow up without their biological father?
In this episode of FROM MY LENS, we have an uncomfortable conversation about fatherhood, masculinity, relationships, responsibility and the consequences of normalising absent fathers.
This isn't about attacking men or defending women.
It's about asking the question nobody wants to ask:
What happens to a society when fatherlessness becomes normal?
Watch, think, and tell me your perspective in the comments.
