The USCGC Polar Star was commissioned in 1976. It is the only heavy icebreaker the United States owns. Every southern summer it sails 16,000 miles to Antarctica and cuts a channel through fast ice up to ten feet thick so one cargo ship can resupply McMurdo Station for a year.
About 150 people live inside it while it does that — backing up and ramming the ice, over and over, sometimes for days. The ship floods, burns, loses all power. There is no shipyard, no tow, and — in the words of the Coast Guard admiral responsible for these missions — no vessel in the nation capable of rescuing the crew if the icebreakers fail in the ice.
This is how the crew actually lives on board, and how they keep a fifty-year-old ship alive with parts nobody manufactures any more.
