Germany was a language long before it was a country, and every empire that ruled it fought over one question: where does Germany end? This history documentary covers the entire history of Germany, from Rome to Merz: Arminius, Charlemagne, the Holy Roman Empire, Bismarck, Hitler and the Berlin Wall.
In the year 9 AD, a Roman officer named Arminius led three legions into a forest in the rain. In about three days, all three were gone. Five empires ruled this land. None of them is here now. Germany is.
This documentary follows Germany empire by empire: the Schöningen spears, Julius Caesar and the Rhine, the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, the Kalkriese finds and the Nineteenth Legion, the Roman frontier, the Franks and Charlemagne, the Saxon wars, the origin of the word deutsch, the division of 843, Otto I and the Holy Roman Empire, Canossa, Gutenberg's printing press, Martin Luther, the Thirty Years' War and the sack of Magdeburg, Napoleon and the end of the empire in 1806, Prussia and Frederick the Great, the Frankfurt parliament of 1848, Otto von Bismarck and the German Empire of 1871, Karl Benz, the Herero and Nama genocide, the First World War, the Weimar Republic and the hyperinflation of 1923, Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich, the Holocaust, Sophie Scholl, the autobahn myth, Konrad Adenauer, the Berlin Wall, reunification in 1990, Angela Merkel, the debt brake, Friedrich Merz, and the plan to build the strongest army in Europe in 2026.
Rome could not hold the far bank. The emperors could not unite the land. Bismarck and Hitler could not keep what they took. What stayed is three Roman cities, sixteen states and one sentence about human dignity. And in 2026, the oldest German question is back.
History in Empires tells the story of a country through every empire that ruled it, in ten minutes. Each video is built on published archaeology, peer-reviewed research and primary sources, listed below.
