In this episode of the Built From Steel Podcast, Coach Eric and Coach Andy discuss how coaches can teach the details players need to move to higher levels without taking creativity and decision-making out of the game. They get into how players mature in their understanding of hockey, what coaches should actually be correcting, and why knowing the difference between an important detail and simply overcoaching matters. The conversation also looks at lineup decisions, power-play opportunities, development versus winning, and what the Milwaukee Brewers championship run can teach us about building successful teams without simply stacking the most talent possible. Finally, Eric and Andy discuss the parent perspective and why watching youth hockey becomes much easier when parents accept how difficult it can be to understand everything happening inside the game. Good coaching gives players enough structure to understand the game, while still giving them enough freedom to actually play it.
