All rooms in order: • The Ruined Castle — Room by Room
No one has come to read here in a hundred years, and every day the pages are still aired. The chained library is a long, narrow upper room under an open roof of grey weathered oak. Down both sides of the central aisle stand long rows of old oak reading desks with sloping tops and plain benches, and above every desk runs an iron rod from which thin iron chains hang, each fastened to the edge of a thick leather-bound book. Most of the books lie closed; here and there one lies open, its pages standing loose and fanned. On a desk at the front lies a heavy book bound in red leather, open on its chain. Each day she opens one book and turns its leaves, one by one, so that the damp cannot make them stick, and the next day the next. At the far end of the aisle, one tall narrow window high in the gable wall lets a single shaft of cold light fall down the length of the room, across the slopes of the desks and the edges of the open pages, and fine dust hangs in it. At the aisle end of a bench she sits and plays. Pages left shut in the damp cling together and spoil. No one will unlock the hasps again. The pages are fanned anyway.
