Emotions are not sinful
This morning the Holy Spirit was counseling me when an old conversation came to mind. In it, people had used mental health labels in an accusatory way, as if certain words alone could define a person’s worth or spiritual condition. That moment reminded me how easily we adopt titles for ourselves (or accept them from others) that God never gave us.
Terms such as bipolar, unstable, or too emotional are not the names God speaks over those who are in Christ. In him we are a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17 CSB). Our identity is not defined by fluctuating feelings or by the world’s categories, but by who God says we are.
God created us with a full range of emotions, and Jesus himself experienced them. He wept (John 11:35), felt deep distress and sorrow (Matthew 26:38), and was moved to anger at injustice and hard hearts (Mark 3:5; John 2:13–17). Feeling betrayed when betrayed, sorrow when hurt, anger when something is wrong, joy when something is good, or sadness when something is painful is natural and healthy, not a failure of faith.
There is an elephant in the room. The world we live in now moves at a relentless pace and bombards us with emotionally charged content, conflict, and demands. What gets normalized as ordinary or even healthy is often a distortion. Human minds were not built for this constant chaos, and they were certainly not built to treat it as normal. Processing a full emotional life has become harder in an environment that never lets the dust settle.
The goal is not to eliminate emotion but to keep from sinning because of it. Scripture says, “Be angry and do not sin. Don’t let the sun go down on your anger” (Ephesians 4:26 CSB). The emotion itself is not unworthy. What matters is what we do with it.
Do not fear your emotions or rush to suppress them. Sit with them. Invite the Holy Spirit, the Counselor who guides into truth (John 16:13 CSB), to sort what is true from what is false, what is right from what is wrong, and what the next step should be. The fruit of the Spirit includes self-control (Galatians 5:22–23 CSB). Pray with the psalmist: “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns. See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the everlasting way” (Psalm 139:23–24 CSB).
All emotions are God-given, but remember to let the Holy Spirit interpret the why of that emotion and counsel you on how or if to act on it, and who is a safe person to remain around while you’re in it.
