April 16, 1945, Northwest Germany. The sun came up at 6:47 in the morning, but Margarete Hoffman did not feel any warmth. She stood in the field hospital near the town of Oldenburg and watched Canadian soldiers surround the building. There were 147 wounded German soldiers inside who could not walk or fight. There were 31 medical workers—27 women and 4 old doctors. Margarete was the head nurse. She was 34 years old and had worked as a military nurse for 12 years. She believed everything the Nazi Party told her.
