What does it take to build a dam powerful enough to hold back one of Asia’s greatest rivers while generating an incredible 22.5 gigawatts of electricity? In this video, we go deep inside the Three Gorges Dam, one of the most ambitious engineering megaprojects ever constructed. Spanning approximately 2.3 kilometers across China’s Yangtze River and reaching a maximum height of about 181 meters, this gigantic concrete gravity dam is far more than a hydroelectric power station. At the heart of the project are 34 generating units, including 32 massive 700 MW units, creating a total installed capacity of 22,500 MW. But producing electricity is only one part of the story. We explore how engineers redirected the Yangtze River during construction, placed enormous quantities of concrete while controlling dangerous thermal cracking, built huge water intakes and turbines, and created a flood-control system capable of handling extraordinary river flows. You will also discover one of the most fascinating features of the Three Gorges project: its enormous navigation system. Cargo ships climb through a five-stage ship lock, while smaller vessels can use an extraordinary vertical ship lift that raises ships more than 100 meters between the downstream river and the reservoir. This engineering documentary also examines the gigantic Three Gorges Reservoir, sediment management, geological monitoring, power transmission infrastructure, flood control, and the environmental and social challenges associated with building such a massive project. From giant turbines hidden deep inside the powerhouse to violent floodwater exploding through the spillways, every part of the Three Gorges Dam operates as one interconnected engineering system. How was a structure of this scale actually built? How can millions of tons of concrete resist the pressure of tens of billions of cubic meters of water? And how does a hydroelectric plant with 22.5 GW of installed capacity safely operate on one of the world’s most powerful river systems? Watch until the end as we break down the construction, engineering, technology and incredible scale behind the Three Gorges Dam.
