Thousands of people walk through the St. Augustine City Gate every year on their way to St. George Street. But those familiar coquina pillars are more than a picturesque entrance to the historic district.
They are one of the last visible remnants of a defensive system that once surrounded colonial St. Augustine.
In this episode of St. Augustine TV, we explore why the walls were built, how they helped defend St. Augustine during the 1740 siege led by Georgia Governor James Oglethorpe, and why being inside or outside the walls once carried social and even spiritual meaning.
We also look at the coquina pillars that remain today, dating to around 1808, and how they survived after most of St. Augustine’s old fortifications disappeared.
