February 1976, Daytona 500 qualifying: the three fastest cars in the field — driven by A.J. Foyt, Darrell Waltrip, and Dave Marcis — were sitting almost three miles an hour ahead of the rest. By Sunday, all three started from the back.
Foyt and Waltrip were hiding nitrous oxide, wired straight into the engine. Marcis had no gas at all — his trick was a simple piece of aluminum over the radiator, positioned exactly where NASCAR's rulebook said it shouldn't be. Three drivers, three completely different ways to cheat, caught on the same qualifying day by the same NASCAR inspectors.
Then the entire scandal disappeared — overshadowed by one of the most famous finishes in Daytona 500 history: Richard Petty and David Pearson crashing coming off turn four, on the very last lap.
This is the 1976 Daytona 500 cheating scandal nobody remembers — because of what happened right after it.
