True sacrifice in ministry was never about what you gave up. It was always about who gave you the ability to give it.
We are back with Episode 4 of Doing Ministry the Right Way and this episode is one that is going to make a lot of people uncomfortable in the best way possible. Because we are tackling one of the most misunderstood concepts in ministry today. SACRIFICE.
We have all heard it. Ministers wearing their suffering like a badge of honour. Counting every hard thing they have been through as proof of their dedication to God. Expecting reward, recognition and a special place in God's heart because of everything they have given up.
But what if that is not sacrifice at all? What if what we have been calling sacrifice has actually been pride wearing a very convincing disguise?
Because here is what we often forget, we do not sacrifice in our own strength. We do not give up things by our own power or our own will. Every act of sacrifice that has ever been done in ministry was only possible because God gave us the grace, the ability and the strength to do it in the first place. So who exactly are we taking credit for?
True sacrifice is not something to boast about. It is not a transaction with God where you suffer now and collect your reward later. It is a humble, quiet response to a God who first gave everything for us and whose grace alone makes it possible for us to give anything back.
This is not a conversation about doing less or giving less. This is a conversation about understanding where the ability to give comes from in the first place and letting that truth keep your heart humble, grateful and free.
